Alternative Learning Week: Monday 5th – Friday 9th July 2010
Last week saw the school’s Alternative Learning Week for Y7/8/9 students.
The alternative learning week is a project that staff had planned for, to teach the boys in a completely different way.
The main aim of this week was to promote the enjoyment of learning and to celebrate achievement and success. It aimed to provide alternative teaching and learning opportunities for all our students and the activities all had a sound educational basis to them. We are fully aware that children learn in many different ways and at different rates of progress.
This week turned out to be a fun week of alternative teaching and learning at the school. Many boys were out of school for some or, indeed, all of the week.
The students took part in a variety of activities. All the boys were involved in a full days Work Related Learning activity where they were set a task and had to work in teams to solve the problem before reporting back to the whole of the year.
The Y9 boys also had the opportunity to take part in a Community Action Project. Some of the activities included street dance, bird box making, reed planting and working with exotic pets!!!
Other activites within school included the Climbing Wall, cooking in Hells Kitchen, mathematical code breaking, art animation, The Lab in a Lorry, editing video clips sketching on the river bank, newspaper article writing and many other fantastic activities. A group of Y7 students were involved in a music day where they learnt to play musical instruments and were given the task of performing a piece of music at the end of the day. One group was so god that they were auditioned and invited to play at the KS3 Achievement Evening in front of 300 students and adults. The SAT NAVS were fantastic!!!
The feedback from both the students and staff is that the week was extremely busy and positive in the way the boys responded in such a mature way. Well done to everyone who made the week such a huge success.
The plans are already starting for next years Alternative Learning Week!!!!!
